Pipeline
The Kirkuk–Haifa Oil Pipeline was built between 1932 and 1934 by the Iraq Petroleum Company. Most of the area through which the pipeline passed was under a British mandate approved by the League of Nations. The pipeline was strategically important to the British Government, and in fact, provided much of the needed fuel to the British and American forces in the Mediterranean during World War II.
Airbases were built next to the oil pumping stations along the pipeline; they were named after the pumping stations.
